By Dee Grenert Sports Editor PLYMOUTH — Plymouth boys basketball star Randy Davis’ schedule includes starting classes at Ball State on June 13. His calendar got a little more crowded Saturday with his selection to the Indiana All-Star team. The Indiana team plays Kentucky in the prestigious annual two-game series — this year scheduled for — you guessed it — June 13 in Indianapolis, and June 15 in Louisville. “I’ll go to school and then go to the game,” Davis said. “Ball State might give me the day off. I don’t know, I have to talk to them. That’s going to be hectic.”
Not that he minds. After participating in the Top 60 Workout last Sunday with his fellow elite senior players throughout the state, he spent six long days waiting for the release of the 14-player squad. And even though he finished second place in Mr. Basketball balloting behind University of North Carolina recruit Tyler Zeller, even though he averaged 22.9 points his senior sesaon, Davis wasn’t taking anything for granted. “I don’t know exactly how they choose,” the 5-foot-11 guard said. “I wanted to get down to the Top 60 Workout and keep playing like I had all season, and hopefully, get a spot. It was a goal of mine at the beginning of the season.” He received the good news from Indiana game director Pete Smith Saturday. “It feels great now,” Davis said. “I guess I’m relieved. All week I didn’t know if I made it. I got a call that it was official during the day Saturday from Pete Smith. It was nice. I talked to him (at the Top 60 Workout) and he told us kind of what to expect. When Pete Smith told me on the phone that I’d made it, it was a great relief to finally know.” Davis, who played on the Junior All-Star team last year, expects the All-Star experience to include plenty of hard work, mixed with fun. “I played on the Junior All-Stars last year, and it was a lot of fun,” he said. “We were talking to last year’s seniors and they told us their practices had been ridiculous. They also told us it was a lot of fun. We’ll have to get down to work, get down to playing.” Davis — the fifth Pilgrim All-Star in the series’ 69-year history — becomes the first Plymouth selection since Michael Edison made the team in 1995. Scott Skiles (1982), Bruce Grimm (1973) and Steve Phillips (1971) also represented Plymouth in the traditional rivalry. “It’s going to be awesome,” Davis said of representing his state and school. “There have been great players from here, like Skiles and Edison, who’ve played. I’m going to be ready for the challenge. “I thank all the coaches — not just here — but all the coaches that have coached me,” he said. “I thank them for the time they put in, for believing in me and pushing me to work harder to be the best player I could be.” The Indiana All-Stars play the Juniors in a pair of tune-ups — June 9 at the Hatchet House in Washington, and June 11 at Bill Green Arena in Marion. The Indiana All-Stars lock horns with the Kentucky All-Stars at Conseco Fieldhouse on June 13, and June 15 at Louisville Gardens. 2008 Indiana High School All-Stars By The Associated Press Ht Avg.
