BY JOHN REED LEADER EDITOR MONTEREY — The porch light is on at 7025 Center St., but no one’s coming home, ever. On Sunday afternoon, April 13, at 3:02 p.m. the Pulaski County Sheriff's Department received a call that shots had been fired at the home. By 3:05 p.m., the Monterey Fire Department and First Responders were on the scene and reported that a woman was dead. Denise Solano, 35, was found in the front seat of a green Saturn, dead from a .22-cal. rifle shot. She had left work at the Plymouth Wal-Mart store at about 1:30 p.m., driving home in a car belonging to a female co-worker.
Neighbors heard the gunshot and told police the shooter was Denise's husband, Tomas, age 30. Fearing for the safety of others, police launched a massive manhunt in Pulaski, Fulton, Starke and LaPorte counties. Tom Solano fled the scene in a gray 1991 Ford Explorer. He called family members on a cell phone, and police were able to trace him to Greenwood Cemetery in Michigan City. Family members told police he was suicidal. Michigan City Police shut down the cemetery and called out their SWAT team. Police saw a man lying on the ground, partially hidden by gravestones, and found Solano lying on his father's grave. Police said he shot himself in the head with the same rifle he used to kill his wife. However, the Pulaski County Sheriff’s report states that the rifle was found in the vehicle. According to Michigan City Police Chief Ben Neitzel, no shots were fired by any officer. "Law enforcement did not fire a shot," Neitzel said. Solano's friends were very familiar with his story of his father's death, when, as a young boy, he watched his father commit suicide by setting himself afire. The memories seared his mind all his life, sending him in and out of mental hospitals. Solano was transported to St. Anthony Hospital in Michigan City. He remained in the intensive care unit as of Tuesday morning. Pulaski County Sheriff Michael Gayer said Solano has a “40 to 60 percent survivability rate.” “He may be in a coma the rest of his life, but they don’t think his condition is life-threatening,” he said. Most of Tom Solano’s family lives in Michigan City. Denise's family also are from Michigan City. Her mother, Kathy Kreuger, was in the hospital being treated for a heart condition. Denise had five brothers and sisters and numerous cousins. Her father, Wayne Kreuger, is deceased. She leaves behind five children, ages 4 to 12, of which most currently attend Culver schools. The children have been in custody of family services since an incident last year in which Tom was charged with abuse. While not convicted, he and Denise were ordered to take parenting classes. The family moved into the town from the Lake Langenbaum area last year, into a larger home so each child would have a bedroom. Denise was decorating each room. Co-workers said Denise had been telling Tom she wanted a divorce. Tom had no regular employment, but was doing odd jobs. The Pulaski County Sheriff's Department also arrested Tim McCorkle, 42, at his home at 8515 S. Ash St., Monterey. Sheriff Gayer said McCorkle was picked up on a warrant for failure to appear and is believed to have provided the rifle used in the murder and attempted suicide, "with full knowledge of the suspect's intent to kill his wife."
