PLYMOUTH — Former Plymouth High School basketball coach Jack Edison has a big decision to make: Whether or not to throw his hat in the ring to be the next Plymouth basketball coach.
The Hall of Famer, who retired a year ago, admits that he is thinking about applying to be the next Plymouth coach, replacing interim coach John Scott.
“It’s something that’s been on my mind,” admitted Edison. “I can’t say I’ve made any kind of decision. I guess you could just say I haven’t ruled it out.”
After his first 34 years at the helm of the Pilgrims, Edison really has nothing left to prove, with two state championships to his credit.

So what could entice someone of his credentials out of retirement?
The reason is a simple one.
“You do something for so many years you find yourself missing it,” said Edison. “You miss the other coaches, you miss the people you went to battle with all those years in particular. You form relationships with the players and the kids around the program and you miss that.”
It was that aspect of retirement that was particularly difficult on Edison in the past year.
“I’ve been around some of those people and some of those players a long time,” said Edison. “With Randy (Davis) it was three years and it was difficult not to be a part of his senior year.”
The deadline for internal application for the position is approaching and Edison is still considering whether or not to add his name to the list of applicants. He does say it will be a difficult decision.
“I really need to talk to some of the other coaches,” said Edison. “Find out where they are at; what their feelings are; what they see in the future. I want to spend some time talking to people that I respect and get their point of view. I really don’t know if I can say for sure what will finally make that decision one way or another.”
Or indeed what that decision will be.
“It’s one of those things that you feel that way right now, but you want to be sure you still feel that way in a few days,” said Edison. “I really haven’t made any sort of a decision. It’s just something that I’ve been thinking about.”
