PLYMOUTH — Third graders of four Plymouth elementary schools were treated to a string instrument ensemble performance.
The performers are members of the South Bend Symphony.
The Plymouth Tri Kappa chapter sponsored the program. Escorting and introducing the quintet at Washington, Jefferson, Menominee and Webster Schools was this year’s Tri Kappa Event Chair Barb Miller.
Members of the ensemble demonstrated the various sounds that the instruments can achieve. Their selections of music were chosen to represent the musical sounds associated with different countries.

A portion of the half hour program was devoted to a question and answer time when the audience members could ask the professionals questions concerning their instruments or the orchestra.
Ellie Switzer of Menominee Elementary surprised violinist Nic Orbovich with a question he termed “very in depth”. Switzer asked, “Is the sound your instrument makes coming more from the bow on the strings or from your fingers moving?”
Orbovich then demonstrated the way the bow is constructed and had the various musicians demonstrate sounds on their instruments.
After the performance, bass player Ed Randless commented on the students of the Menominee Elementary audience.
Randless said, “They were among the top groups in terms of behavior that we perform for each year.”
Quintet members included Zofia Glashauser, violin; Nic Orbovich, violin; Gabriel Schlaffer, viola; Carol Bullock Russell; and Ed Randless, bass.
Tri Kappa will also be sponsoring the Spring Art Show display in conjunction with the Plymouth High School musical on May 2 and May 3.
According to Miller, the judging will take place at the elementary and junior high levels on April 28.
Miller said, “At this judging, three pieces will be selected from each of the grades from one through eight.” Miller said judging at the high school level will take place on May 2,
Miller said there will be six categories this year including drawing, color drawing, painting, printmaking, computer graphics and 3-D.
Judging will be done by Heartland Artist volunteers.
