By Rusty Nixon Correspondent PLYMOUTH — With Indiana’s May 6 Primary just around the corner another date looms even closer for area voters. Hoosiers are reminded that the voter registration deadline is April 7. All voters must be registered by that date in order to vote in the primary on May 6.
“Voters have to be registered by 4 p.m. April 7 or if they’re mailing in their registration it has to be postmarked that day,” said Patty Jones, in charge of Voter Registration for the Marshall County Clerk’s Office. “If they are mailing in their registration form, they should remember to mail a photocopy of their picture ID along with it.” Indiana voters must have a photo identification card in order to vote. That ID must be state or federal government issued such as a driver’s license. Jones reminds voters without a driver’s license that they can obtain an official state photo ID card from the Bureau of Motor vehicles. Additionally, voters who have moved or changed their name must update their information by the same deadline. Forms are also available online to speed the process of registration at www.sos.IN.gov. Voters must then mail in their registration form available on the site. “People tell me all the time that they registered on the internet,” said Jones. “They may have filled out the form online but they have to print out that form and mail it or bring it in to the clerk’s office. You can’t register to vote online.” Anyone not registered to vote may register in person at the county voter registration office, county clerk's office, or any Bureau of Motor Vehicles license branch. “My suggestion is that everybody just come down to the clerk’s office to take care of their registration,” said Jones. “That’s the easiest way to make sure it’s done right.” You must meet the following requirements to be eligible to vote in Indiana: you are both a U.S. citizen and a resident of Indiana, at least 18 years of age at the next General Election, Nov. 4, 2008; you are not currently in prison after being convicted of a crime, you have lived in the precinct where you vote for at least 30 days prior to the election, and you are registered to vote.
