By Rusty Nixon Correspondent PLYMOUTH — North Michigan Street is undergoing a facelift until the end of May as construction crews continue work in the area around Centennial Park. Work started Monday on steel conduits and plastic ductwork for electrical wiring for the project. “We planned to pour a little concrete too, but with the weather we held off on that,” said Mike Delp of Michiana Contracting, the chief contractor on the project.
The approximate $358,000 renovation in the area will include work in the medians, with landscaping and new lighting in the area between Price’s Village Valet Cleaners and Grace Baptist Church. A median will also be installed near Burger King but that median will have only landscaping and no lighting fixtures. “We’re going to elevate the medians. Right now, they’re about 3 inches; we’re going to take them up 12 inches,” said Delp. “The curb will be rolled around the medians so if you would happen to hit one with your car there wouldn’t be an abrupt stop.” Once the medians are complete, irrigation and landscaping will be installed. “We’ll have some grasses, maybe some small, short shrubbery,” said Delp. The crews will install decorative lighting to the area similar to the Michigan Street area just south of the project. There will be times of lane closure but Delp hopes to keep those to a minimum. “It’s probably going to be a little tougher getting around there for awhile but the faster we get done the faster we can get out of there,” said Delp. “People will just need to observe caution for awhile, we want to keep everything safe for workers and drivers.” The project completion date is May 29. “We got started a little later than I wanted to but we’re still on time,” said Delp. “They’ve added a little work to the project but we should be right on the completion date or at least within a few days.”
