Legislative session will be topic Saturday E-mail
Thursday, 27 March 2008
By Rusty Nixon Correspondent
PLYMOUTH — The recent session of the Indiana General Assembly provided Hoosiers with some immediate tax relief, but just what does the more than 600-page bill actually say to taxpayers?
That’s a question that local Assembly members hope to answer Saturday morning as they come to Plymouth to talk about the recent session with constituents.
The meeting is scheduled for Saturday, March 29 at 10 a.m. at the Marshall County Building, 112 W. Jefferson St., in The Commissioners Meeting Room 203.
Invited guests are Senators Ed Charbonneau and Ryan Mishler and Representatives Nancy Dembowski and Bill Friend. Everyone is welcome to attend.
“I hope we can make everyone who shows up aware of just what’s in this bill,” said Charbonneau. “We want to highlight some of the more significant items and the effect it might have on taxpayers.
“What we’ve done is going to have a very significant impact and it will be immediate,” he said. “It’s going to be important to watch the effect it has over time, there is a probability that some things will need to be tweaked. It was really a huge step in a very short time.”
In all, Charbonneau is relatively happy with the bill enacted in the legislature’s short session.
“I’m very positive about it, especially with all the emotion that surrounded it going in,” said Charb-onneau. “I think nearly every group had some representation there because everybody was going to be affected by it. Ultimately I think it’s a good bill.”
One big step according to the Senator is the one that begins the process of making some permanent relief for taxpayers.
“We took the first step in a two step process of course in immediate relief,” he said. “The second piece is looking at government structure and the Kernan-Shepherd report. Now that the pressure is off we don’t have to make any knee jerk reaction.
“The simple fact is that a person from the Civil War days would have trouble with DVDs and computers, but would feel very comfortable with our government. We need to take a look at how our government should be structured. We have good people working hard within the system we have but we have to talk about that system.”
