By Holly Heller Enquirer Editor BREMEN — Nathan McKeand, the new assistant principal at Bremen High School, is looking forward to becoming part of the Bremen community.
“This is a great opportunity for me and I am looking forward to becoming a part of Bremen High School and the community,” he said.
The Bremen School Board hired McKeand earlier this month to fill the vacancy created when former assistant principal Bruce Jennings became principal. Jennings replaced retiring principal Don Harrison.
McKeand said he and his wife, Ashlee, have been given a warm welcome from many faculty and staff members.
“From what I have seen at this point, staff members have a close relationship with one another and are quite involved within the community. Bremen seems to be a close community and one that is quite involved in the educational system. It is apparent to me that one’s faith plays a large role in the Bremen community, which I gladly embrace.”
McKeand is a 1996 graduate of Warsaw Community High School and earned his bachelor’s in marketing education with a vocational endorsement from Ball State University in 2000. He taught two years in the South Bend Community School Corporation — one at Riley and one at Washington — before relocating to Lafayette to teach at McCutcheon High School. For the past seven years, he has served on numerous school committees in addition to coordinating the cooperative education and DECA programs. He also completed an administrative internship with McCutcheon. In 2005, he earned his master’s in administration from Purdue University. The 12-member selection committee chose McKeand unanimously from a field of two dozen candidates, according to Jennings. “I believe Nate will relate well with our students and staff members and I am confident that he will be actively engaged in the Bremen community,” Jennings said. “ He has a strong background in developing business partnerships and vocational programs that serve students. I also appreciate his interests in creating mentoring programs for students and professional development opportunities for staff members. “I am excited about having Nate McKeand as a colleague and a member of the Bremen Family,” Jennings said. Outside of work, McKeand also enjoys spending time with family and friends, outdoor activities such as landscaping, camping and fishing. He also likes sports, especially baseball and golf. McKeand and his wife plan to relocate to Bremen this summer.
