By Mandy McFarland Editor NAPPANEE — No one was injured last Wednesday morning, Feb. 20, when fire broke out at approximately 10:30 a.m. in an upstairs bedroom at 657 S. Madison Street in Nappanee. Resident Pam Zentz was not home at the time, however one of her daughters and two of her grandchildren were in the house when the fire broke out.
Neighbor Anette Hauptli saw the fire and placed the 911 call. According to Nappanee Police Chief Tom Anglin, one of the grandchildren in the home had been upstairs playing with a lighter. The fire originated in a second-floor bedroom. Firefighters arrived quickly and had the blaze under control in about an hour. The room was severely damaged, while the rest of the house sustained smoke and water damage. While the Zentz family may not be able to return home for a while, family, friends and neighbors were not hesitant to offer a place for them to stay. The house was not far from the path of the Oct. 18 tornado and narrowly missed being destroyed. |
