Davey Dunkin leaves legacy of Lion pride E-mail
Thursday, 21 February 2008
By Holly Heller Enquirer Editor
BREMEN — He was known as Bremen’s No. 1 Fan. He attended every sporting event, dressed in Bremen green, cheering loudly for the Lions.
And now, nearly a year after he passed away at the age of 72, David “Davey” Dunkin’s support and love of the Lions continues.
He made sure of that by leaving an endowment of more than $11,000 to establish the David G. Dunkin Scholarship under the Bremen Dollars for Scholars (BDFS) umbrella.
“Through the establishment of this scholarship, Davey will continue to support our students as he did faithfully throughout his life,” said Troy Holmes, president of BDFS and athletic director of Bremen High School.
The scholarship fund will continue to grow through the Marshall County Community Foundation each year.
“Bremen Dollars for Scholars deposited the funds with the Marshall County Community Foundation where their investment received a 25 percent match,” said BHS Athletic Director Troy Holmes.
He noted that part of the proceeds from the March 3 BDFS Phone-A-Thon will help fund this year’s Dunkin Scholarship, which will be a $500 award to a Bremen senior this spring.
Holmes is pleased to see a scholarship established in memory of Dunkin.
“To me, Davey Dunkin was the ultimate optimist,” Holmes said. “I do not know anyone more deserving of a Bremen High School scholarship bearing their name than Davey.”
