DONALDSON — The Ancilla College men’s basketball team inched closer to the playoffs as they split a pair of weekend road games, winning at Grand Rapids 91-84 Friday and falling at Glen Oaks 89-79 Saturday. Though Chargers coach Steve Helm hoped to at least earn the split over the weekend, he couldn’t have imagined it would come this way.
Facing Grand Rapids (17-6, 9-4 MCCAA), ranked second in the MCCAA Western Conference, the Chargers (11-13, 6-8 MCCAA) managed to win despite not playing freshman phenom Hampton Sallee. Instead, Ancilla rode the efforts of three players — Ethan McNary, Byron Faulstich and Justin Perkins — to pull off the upset. McNary led the way with 24 points, 13 rebounds seven assists and four blocks for Ancilla. Meanwhile, Faulstich and Perkins each scored 22 points while Faulstich also contributed six assists on the night. Dejan Nedelkovski chipped in 13 points and seven assists for Ancilla. The next day was a completely different story as Ancilla, returning to full-strength, could not get past Glen Oaks (10-14, 4-10 MCCAA), a team ranked second-to-last in the conference. McNary and Nedelkovski each scored 17 to lead the Chargers, while Perkins and Sallee scored 16 and 13 points, respectively. Thanks to fellow playoff contender Muskegon also losing Saturday, the Chargers (11-13, 6-8 MCCAA) can wrap up a playoff spot Wednesday when they host last-place Jackson Community College at the LifePlex in Plymouth. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m. |
