By Michelle Donaghey Correspondent BREMEN — Use it or lose it. Helen Kuntz, a volunteer at The Whitlock in Bremen, definitely agrees with that mantra. At the age of 90, she leads a group of around eight to 12 seniors in “Sit and Be Fit” exercise every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday morning. “I exercised in Florida,” said Kuntz who made up her routine from some of the exercises she had previously done before moving to Bremen, adapting some of them to chair use. “I came here (The Whitlock) and there was no exercise class and I was getting lazy. So I decided to adapt it,” said Kuntz. The active senior who still drives and also walks for exercise has been leading the class for around seven years at the building in a room that has been set up strictly for the class with chairs lined in rows.
“She is really something. I’m grateful she does it, ” said Karen Wills, building manager. The seniors who participate in her class have to agree. “I really need the exercise and I do like to be with my friends,” said Madene Balsley. “I really do like it,” added Merlie Sechrist who said that without her son, Butch, egging her on to go every week, she might not do so. “He makes sure that I get here,” she said with a laugh. “I enjoy it,” said Marion Scott who said she has been attending the classes for around four years. Aldean Feldman, who has been “sitting to be fit” since October, thinks that the classes help her to “feel much better. And it keeps me more limber!” she added enthusiastically. The half hour includes stretching, bending, lifting and breathing. “The legs and breathing exercises have to be the best,” said Doug Bruce. “I have a balance problem and it seems to help.” “We thought you would say the women!” laughed Balsley to his answer. Kuntz keeps the routine simple, with minimal changes. “I have changed it somewhat, but what we have now works well,” she said.
