PLYMOUTH — The search for a new principal for Lincoln Junior High School is nearing an end, administrators said. Plymouth Schools Superintendent Dr. John Hill said the school corporation received 17 applications for the position. After screening the applications, Hill said the hiring committee has narrowed the number of candidates to four.
The school board scheduled a special meeting for May 30 to choose a new principal. The meeting will begin in executive session at 5 p.m. and will be followed by a public session. The new principal will replace John McNeil, who will retire in June after 17 years as LJHS principal.
The school corporation has extended the deadline for receiving applications for the Plymouth High School band director position. Assistant School Superintendent Dan Tyree told the school board school administrators had originally planned to hire a new band director before summer. “But, we didn’t get many applications for the position,” Tyree said. Tyree said upon further research, he found that most school band directors wait until mid-May to send out applications for jobs they are interested in. After extending the deadline for applications, Tyree said the school corporation received 24 applications which have been narrowed down to 10. Tyree said the hiring committee will present their recommendation to the board June 21. The new director will replace Cindy Wagoner, who will step down in June to pursue a doctorate degree. Tyree said students were involved in compiling a list of 15 characteristics top candidates should have. He said skills and experience in directing a marching band is included on the list. “Contrary to some rumors that may be circulating, we are definitely planning to have a marching band,” Tyree said. The board approved textbook fees for fifth and sixth graders in the school system. Tyree told the board parents of fifth graders will pay a $93.99 fee for books this year. Parents of sixth graders will pay $91.50 if their child is in band, $87.50 if their child is in choir or $85.50 if their child is in neither band nor choir. Tyree said almost every grade will pay less in textbook fees than last year. Fifth grade band students will save $39.87 and choir students will save $27.87 while fifth grade students will save $12.05. The board also approved a $95,270 expenditure to purchase replacement bleachers for one of the gymnasiums at LJHS. The next school board meeting will be held June 7, at 4 p.m. at the School Administration Building.
