PLYMOUTH — A number of volunteers representing Fulton County Animal Control helped to transport nine dogs and 12 cats to the Plymouth Veterinary Clinic Sunday.
Since the Fulton County facility located in Akron does not have an indoor area to display the animals that are ready for adoption, the staff of the veterinary clinic agreed to open up their office for a first time “adoption day.”
Fulton County volunteer Chris Swango said the only funds they receive are for a three-day stay for the animals they either pick-up as stays or receive through owner voluntary surrender. Those funds are allowed through city and county agreements.
Swango said “As long as there is space, the animal appears to be healthy and the staff handlers do not notice any behavior problems, they keep the animals as long as possible with the donations they receive from individuals and businesses.”
She said donations of pet foods, kitty litter as well as monetary donations are desperately needed. She said local pet supply stores help by donating any broken bags of food.
When she isn’t’ transporting animals, Swango volunteers to update ten web-sites for animal adoptions. She also responds to any emails that are forwarded.
Also volunteering for the afternoon was Kay Emond of the clinic. She has worked for Plymouth Veterinary for the past 21 years. She said, “I’ve wanted to do this (adoption day) for a long time.”
She works as the Practice Manager for the clinic. Jodi Brown, who is a veterinary assistant at the clinic, spent much of her time on Sunday helping the animals calm down after they arrived.
Adoption fees are extremely reasonable. Swango said the fee for a mixed-breed dog is $30 and a pure-breed dog is $50. The fee for adopting a puppy is $40. Puppies receive the needed shots and worming before they are adopted out. Fees for cats and kittens range from $15-$20.
All of those working on December 2 are volunteering to transport and display the dogs and cats again on December 9 and Dec. 16 The times for both days will be from 1:00-4:00 p.m.
More information on the animal adoption programs is available at www.fultoncounty.petfinders.com.
