DAR honors Good Citizens E-mail

The Tippecanoe Wyth-ougan Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) has recently completed its Good Citizens Award and Scholarship Contest for the seniors in Marshall County high schools, which is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship.
The student selected must have the qualities of Dependability (which includes truthfulness, loyalty and punctuality), Service (which includes cooperation, courtesy and consideration of others) and Patriotism (that includes unselfish interest in family, school, community and Nation) to an outstanding degree.
At an awards reception on April 10, the following students were honored at the United Church of Christ in Plymouth:
Dane A. Sahlhoff, son of Lori Sult of Bourbon, is the winner of the Argos, Bremen, and Triton area and has also been declared the Marshall County winner. His entry was entered in the state contest. Sahlhoff has been active in many school activities, especially the concert choir and the Trojan Singers. Sahlhoff was in Destination ImagiNation, which was state finalist three years ago, and also in the National Honor Society and Science Club.
He is also active in his church youth group that holds clothing drives every month and is active in many community service activities and he enjoys helping others. He was an attendee of the Richard Lugar Symposium and he works part time at Bourbon Street Pizza. Sahlhoff plans to attend Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute to major in Physics Engin-eering. His dream is to help devise new sources of energy to replace the scarce oil that we are so dependent on.
Genero Marquez, son of Blas and Leticia Marquez of Bremen, is the Bremen Good Citizen. He is active in several clubs and served as officer of the National Honor Society, DECA, Spell Bowl, Choir and Spanish Club. He has also been active in wrestling and soccer.
Marquez is employed part time at Almega TruFlex and is also a member of the Gold Star Counseling Advisory Council. His hobbies include movie-making, lifting weights and a variety of sports. Marquez enjoys helping people and doing community service.
He plans to attend Krannert School of Manage-ment at Purdue majoring in marketing and finance. His aspiration in life is to help others to be successful.
Kayla Alcorn, daughter of John and Jacki Alcorn of Argos, is the Good Citizen of Argos High School. She is active in the National Honor Society and has been involved in musicals, choir, the Sunshine Society, the 4-H club and sports.
Alcorn has served as an officer, has received many sports letters and attended Hoosier Girls State. She is editor of the school paper and her hobbies include baking, sports photography and playing piano and guitar. She is active in her church and community helping others.
Alcorn went to Portugal and Chicago on missions trips working with teens. She plans to attend college majoring in communications or graphic arts and hopes to study abroad at least part of the time.
Brandon Michael Fox, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Fox of Plymouth, is the Good Citizen of Plymouth High School. He is the president of the National Honor Society, vice president of the LEAD Program, class officer all through high school and was involved in the Plymouth High School Spring Open House. Fox is a member of the Speech and Debate teams and the Varsity Club.
He is in the marching band, the jazz band and also participated in solo competitions. Fox was involved in cross-country, track and wrestling. He was a delegate to Hoosier Boys‚ State, attended a summer leaders‚ seminar at the U.S. Academy and attended HOBY conferences and the Richard Lugar Symposium.
He has been active in various community activities and plans to major in Internation-al Relations at the United States Military Academy.
Amanda Kay Shively, daughter of Steven and Peggy Shively of North Liberty, is the John Glenn Good Citizen. Shively has participated in many art shows and has won many first place ribbons. She is a member of the Art Club and is a talented artist with a natural talent for painting, drawing, computer graphics and illustration.
Shively has won top Algebra, Chemistry and Physics awards and likes to be helpful and active in her community. She works at Liberty Bowling Lanes and plans to attend IUSB majoring in Art.
William J. Graff, son of Joseph and Dorene Graff, is the Good Citizen of LaVille High School. Graff is also the winner of the Plymouth, LaVille, John Glenn, and Culver area. He is a National Honor Society member and has received many Academic Excellence Awards all through high school.
He has been listed in Who’s Who among High School Seniors for three years. Graff has participated in many sports such as cross country and track and has been involved in the Science Olympiad, Fellowship of Christian Students, German Club, Ski Club, FFA, 4-H, Student Council and more. Graff has been very involved in his church serving as lectern, teacher, youth and group leader.
He believes in helping others and giving generously of his time and energy to people in need. He plans to join the Air Force to serve his country.
Theresa Weirick, daughter of Jim Weirick of Culver, is the Good Citizen for Culver High School. She attended the New Generations of Women Leaders Conference at St. Mary‚s. She has been student of the month several times and will be Valedictorian for her graduating class. Weirick attended the Hoosier Girl’s State and is student leader for CAVS. She has been participating in plays for fours years in high school.
Weirick is active in her community and enjoys reading, music and movies. She is employed at the Culver Coffee Company part time and hopes to receive her A+ certification to attend Purdue majoring in physical therapy.
Also awarded at the reception were winners of the American History Essay Contest. The essays were written as if the child were writing while living in the early Jamestown period. Winners Mary Elizabeth Swartz (grade 6), Maura Faulstich (grade 5), and Kelly Bryant (grade seven) are all student of St. Michael Catholic School.
Rene Houin, chairman, presented the winning students with certificates. Blake Lemler and Lindsay Ganshorn are the eight grade winners of the Good Citizenship contest. Both students attend Triton Jr. Sr. High School in Bourbon.
The two were awarded with medals by Jeanine Klotz, Chair of the Tippecanoe River Wythougan Chapter of the DAR during their annual meeting.
