By Ryan S. Jessen Pilot Correspondent BREMEN — The sun was shining and the popcorn was popped in anticipation of the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader between Bremen and Culver Military Academy. In the end, it was the sounds of the Bremen bats that filled the ball field, as the boys in green swept the visiting Eagles 11-7 and 10-9. The Lions jumped all over CMA’s pitching in Game 1, scoring in all six innings. The home team started the game with consecutive singles by sophomores Steven Cornett and Eric Zeltwanger. Following a stolen base, Cornett crossed home plate with the first run on a wild pitch.
The scoring continued in the second frame as starting pitcher, and another of the four starting sophomores, Chris Hueni, laced a double to start the inning and Daryl Ritchie singled in the second run. The Eagles quickly bounced back as Kyler Scott ripped a single, stole a base and then was plated by David Gerths to make it 2-1 before Bremen tallied one more run in the bottom of the third. The game was blown open in the fourth inning as the Lions scored four runs on six hits. Leading the way was Cornett and Zeltwanger, who tripled and doubled in runs, respectively. CMA edged back into contention behind Moe Weddington’s hitting. The Eagles’ catcher hit a towering home run shot in the fifth and sliced an RBI double in the sixth. Weddington finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Also hitting well was Sean Higgins, who cracked two doubles and scored twice. Gerths finished the first game with a 3-for-4 effort and an RBI. Bremen was led by Hueni, who besides getting the win from the mound, went 3-for-4 with two singles and a double. Cornett and Zeltwanger both finished 2-for-3, with Cornett driving in two. Also hitting well was Ryan Dernay, who was 2-for-3 with a ringing double. “Chris did a good job at the plate and on the mound today,” said Bremen head coach Bo Hundt. “I’m real happy with the way we come to the game and bring a positive attitude. I look forward to that every game.” With the Lions, who are playing solid baseball, the Eagles struggled with its defense. “I don’t want to take anything away from Bremen, but we gave this game away,” concluded Eagles head coach Gary Hinton, whose team made five fielding errors in the first game and seven for the day. “I want to give credit to them, but we didn’t want it as bad. We just didn’t want it.” The second game was a slugfest (27 hits, 19 runs combined), with the Lions holding on for the one-run decision. Eryk Zimmerman (4-4, double, 2 RBIs) and Blaine Maxson (3-4, double) paced the Lions. Connor Bartelman homered for CMA. • BREMEN 11-10, CMA 7-9 At Bremen Game 1 CMA 001 122 1 — 7 12 5 Bremen 111 422 x — 11 15 1 Kean Bartelman (L, 2-1), Ross Blankenship (6) and Moe Weddington; Chris Hueni (W, 1-2), Cody Barrier (S, 6) and Blaine Maxson. 2B: Weddington (CMA), Sean Higgins 2 (CMA), Hueni (B), Zeltwanger (B), Ryan Dernay (B), Matt Bahr (B). 3B: Steven Cornett (B).
