The Cookie Monster — made of hay — has his spot in downtown Culver. Pilot Photos/Jeff Kenney By Jeff Kenney Staff Writer CULVER — The streets of Culver are once again becoming a rogue’s gallery of hand-made creatures ranging — if previous years are any indication — from the silly to the ghoulish, the sinister to the absurd. Fall is here and so is Culver’s annual scarecrow contest, sponsored by the Culver Chamber of Commerce. Everyone in Culver is invited to participate — individuals, businesses, clubs, school groups, churches, organizations, families, or others. There is an entry fee of $10, which includes corn stalks to cover the back of the street light post and sign for the name of the scarecrow, as well as the ribbons awarded to participants. Scarecrows are to be 5 feet, 5 inches to 6 feet in height and are to be secured securely and unobtrusively to the light post. No sharp objects are allowed, and a sign is to be posted with the scarecrow’s name, above the scarecrow itself. No corporate names or logos are allowed, and participants are encouraged to use materials that will withstand the weather, and secure all articles of clothing on the scarecrow. Registrations (with scarecrow name and phone number of participant) may be mailed to 17162 16C Rd., Culver, IN 46511. A street light post will be assigned after registration. Registration forms are available at Fisher & Co. Clothiers, Café Max and the Culver Coffee Company. The public will vote for a “Best of Show” scarecrow in participating venues around Culver and breakdown of scarecrows is Nov. 1. Questions may be directed to Kathy Hart at 574-842-3923. Checks should be made payable to CCC Scarecrow Contest and mailed to the address above.
