Pilot photo/Rusty Nixon By Rusty Nixon Correspondent PLYMOUTH — Plymouth High School’s LEAD club is challenging all aviators to test their skills in aerodynamics for fun and prizes. The club of high school students are holding a fund raiser at this Saturday’s Plymouth vs. NorthWood girls basketball game and again on Jan. 15 during the Plymouth vs. Concord boys game to help out the Neighborhood Center’s Food Pantry. Participants will pay the entry fee then construct their most aerodynamic paper airplane to hit the target at mid court.
Prizes range from collectibles, t-shirts and meals and free days at the LifePlex. Airplanes will continue fly until the last prize is given away. LEAD (Leaders Eliminating Alcohol and Drugs) have been involved in community outreach for a long time at Plymouth High School. “It started out as SADD (Student’s Against Drunk Driving) but over the years we wanted to go further than just working against drunk driving,” said Gene Skirvin, Faculty Advisor to the group. “We changed the name to LEAD to reflect that and we’ve been around under that name for at least 12 or 13 years now.” The group sponsors activities such as last year’s “mock crash” highlighting the horrors of drunken driving, and actively solicits written pledges during prom and graduation time in the spring for students to remain drug and alcohol free. Since their inception the group has also been active in helping community organizations, especially those battling hunger. “The Red Cross had a food pantry and we always did what we could for them,” said Skirvin. “At all our fund raiser dances we give reduced admission price to those who bring two canned food items. The Red Cross doesn’t have a pantry anymore but we still wanted to help out so we work with the Neighborhood Center now.” Airplanes will be available at the game for $1 and all the money raised will go to the Neighborhood Center.
