By Dee Grenert Editor CULVER — The Culver Town Council modified the town’s sidewalk and curbing program Tuesday at a regular meeting at Culver Town Hall. Council President Ed Pinder, along with members Ralph Winters, Sally Ricciardi, Lynn Overmyer and Barbara Behnke voted unanimously to split the program’s $25,000 budget evenly between the traditional cost-share program, for applicants wishing to repair or install sidewalks, and a town-sponsored project selected with input from the Council. “I think (allotting funds for a town project) will help immensely with projects that need to be done,” Town Manager Jon Guenin noted. In other changes to the first-come, first-served sidewalk program, the board voted 5-0 to eliminate cost-sharing dollars for new structures and businesses.
“We could use this money better, for people who really can’t afford new sidewalks,” Pinder said. The Council also accepted Thomas Excavating’s bid of $117,145 to replace sewer and water lines on Peru Court. Even with the additional work, part of last year’s massive sewer project, Guenin said the town remains on track to complete the overall work in the black. “We’re still $100,000 short of the $3 million we needed to do the project,” Guenin commented. “You never know what’s going to happen, but I think we’ve got the potential to finish up in a positive under budget way.” In other items: • The board unanimously directed Guenin, who initiated a discussion about the town’s infrastructure priorities for the year, to investigate planning grant possibilities for the town’s stormwater system, well field and water treatment facility. • The Council granted a request from Culver-Union Twp. Public Library’s Ali Schuldt to close Main Street between Washington and Jefferson Streets on Saturday, July 14 for the second annual Taste of Culver.
