By Bobbie Ruhnow Correspondent With the bluest of skies and the American flag waving proudly in the wind, members of Finney Shilling VFW Post 6919 and Collins Tasch American Legion Post 390 gathered at the Veterans Memorial in the Culver Masonic cemetery to honor all veterans past and present, Nov. 11. VFW Chaplain Judd Roush led the opening prayer and VFW Commander Bryce Lindvall spoke to the veterans and other citizens attending.
The Commander recalled his service in the Navy at the time Ronald Reagan, The Great Communicator, was president. He praised the President’s comments on various memorial occasions. One of Reagan's speeches given on the anniversary of D Day ended with this tribute to all veterans: “You all knew that some things are worth dying for. One’s country is worth dying for, and democracy is worth dying for, because it's the most deeply honorable form of government ever devised by man. All of you loved liberty. All of you were willing to fight tyranny, and you knew the people of your countries were behind you.” Members of the Culver Union Township Fire Department and VFW Ladies Auxiliary also stood in tribute to fallen comrades. The ceremony ended with the salute from the firing squad composed of VFW and Legion members and the haunting sound of “Taps.”
