Russell Keehn places the wreath honoring the fallen of World War II in front of the Veterans Memorial on the Marshall County Courthouse lawn during ceremonies for Veterans Day. Pilot photo/Rusty NIxon By Rusty Nixon Correspondent PLYMOUTH — “I look forward to coming out every year and being with the other veterans.” The words of Russell Keehn, veteran of World War II, rang true for most of those veterans who joined others on the Marshall County Courthouse lawn to honor American service personnel on Veterans Day.
Local veterans along with residents and students from St. Michael Catholic School gathered to honor those who have fallen in conflicts around the globe. Many of the veterans in the crowd were looking forward to spending time together, honoring those who gave their lives. Bud Ross, commander of the Disabled American Veterans of Marshall County, had the spirit of a future holiday a little early. “I just give thanks to all who have served and to all our fallen comrades,” he said reflecting on the day’s meaning. “I think this is the greatest day to me,” said Kaye Ross, Bud’s wife. “I’m very proud of my country and proud to honor all who have served it.” Speakers shared their Veterans Day thoughts with the crowd. Plymouth Mayor Mark Senter shared a story written by his father Wayne, a veteran of World War II. Vietnam Veteran Carlos Arambula urged those in attendance to welcome veterans with honor and Veteran Bill Blocker urged the crowd not to apologize for being United States citizens. Ray Brown, a veteran of the Korean conflict, made the trip up from Rochester. “I’m a member of the DAV (Disabled American Veterans) chapter here in Marshall County,” he said. “I come up to have a chance to be around others who served.”
