BREMEN – Howard E. “Bob” Schafer, 95, a lifetime area resident, died at 6:18 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009 at the Community Hospital of Bremen.
Howard was born on Jan. 13, 1914, the second oldest of eight children of Elton P. and Pearl Baughman Schafer. At birth, Howard only weighed 3 lbs., 10 oz. His mother kept him on the oven door to keep his tiny little body warm. At age 16, he only weighed 65 lbs.
He grew up on a farm on Osborne Road in Lakeville, and quit school in the 8th grade to help with the family farm.
On June 24, 1939, Howard and Nina C. Albert were married in South Bend. They bought their farm on Oct. 14, 1940, where they still reside.
Besides farming, Howard also worked at the mint marsh, at the LaPaz elevator, drove school bus for Lapaz schools for 12 years, and was on the Marshall County ASCS Committee for over 20 years.
A hog farmer, Howard still enjoyed having hogs on the farm that his grandson takes care of. He was a charter member of the Marshall County Pork Producers, helping with their fund raisers, and also helped for many years at the Marshall County 4-H Fair.
Howard is survived by Nina, his wife of 70 years, two daughters: Janet Gottlieb of Hobart and Connie Ullery of Bremen, four grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and one great-great grandson.
Also surviving are a brother, Lyle Schafer of California, two sisters-in-law: Val June Schafer and Dorothy Schafer, both of Lakeville, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Four brothers: Ralph, Glenn, Roy and Charles Schafer and two sisters: Mildred Hayes and Mary Baughman.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6 in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.
Calling will continue after 9 a.m. until time of services at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7 in the Plymouth Missionary Church, 1350 E. Jefferson St., where he was a member, officiated by the Rev. Patrick Puglisi.
Burial will follow in Bremen Cemetery.
Memorial gifts in Howard’s name may be given to the Marshall County 4-H Fair Board.

ZIONSVILLE — Betsy Mae Barnes age 70 of Zionsville, IN (formerly of Bourbon) passed away unexpectedly Sunday, Nov. 1, in St. Vincent Hospital of Indianapolis.
Betsy was the daughter of Howard Dillingham and Esther Parks Dillingham born April 11, 1939 in Howard County, Ind. She was a resident of the Bourbon area and the past 20 years were at Zionsville. She married Ralph Barnes Oct. 30, 1989; he died in July of 2009. She was a retired nurse working in Bremen, Warsaw and the Cleveland Clinic, a short time in Hawaii and most recently in the Indianapolis area. She was a graduate of Bourbon High School class of 1958 and later from Memorial Hospital of South Bend School of Nursing.
Betsy enjoyed being a seamstress, reading, knitting, crocheting and she had a love for her dogs.
She is survived by her four children: Lisa and husband Jeff Dormire of Etna Green, Kathi and husband Seth Faulkner of Bourbon, Thomas and wife Amy Schaetzle of Knightstown and Marla and husband James Hendrix of Bourbon; along with five step-children; Kathleen Barnes, Tim Barnes, Beth Courtney, Julie Barnes and Jeff Barnes.
She also has nine grandchildren, one great-grandchild and a brother Jim & Sue Dillingham of Shreveport, La.
She was preceded in death by a step-son Jon and a brother Bill Reese.
A celebration of Betsy’s life will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7 in Deaton-Clemens Funeral Home 115 S. Main St. Bourbon. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until the time of servicess Saturday in the funeral home. Burial will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Bourbon.
The family request, because of her love for dogs, memorial contributions be made in her memory to a Humane Society of your choice.
