By Rusty Nixon Correspondent PLYMOUTH — Ted Brown is one police officer who takes the “serve” part of the motto “To protect and serve” seriously. After 15 years of service as a police officer for the city of Plymouth, Brown will take on another service responsibility as Mayor Mark Senter’s latest appointment to the Plymouth Park Board. Brown officially replaced Gina Young on the board — who resigned to become Recreation and Activities Director at the Park — at Monday’s board meeting.
“I actually asked about being on the board awhile back before there was a vacancy,” said Brown of his appointment. “When there was an opening, I approached Mike Hite (Superintendent) and Mayor Senter and told them I’d be willing to serve.” For Brown it was a natural fit. “I figured I spent a lot of time out there as the Bike Officer for the Police Department this would just be another way to be of service to the community.” Brown is a 1987 graduate of Plymouth High School. He received his bachelor’s degree from Purdue University in Law and Society. In 1994, he was hired on at the Plymouth Police Department. While an officer, Brown has held the positions of K-9 Unit, detective and bike patrol. He has been a volunteer football coach at PHS for the last nine years. Brown is a member of FOP Lodge #130 and he is a former volunteer firefighter. He and his wife of 16 years, Carol, have two daughters and they attend the Plymouth Wesleyan Church. “I’ve got to get a feel for the job first, but I’m very excited about being a part of the board,” said Brown. “I feel the community is very blessed to have such a beautiful park and I want to do what I can to keep it that way and improve it.” Brown hopes to be part of finding ways to make Plymouth facility’s even better. “We have all the great ball fields out there and we always have things we can do there to improve them, and the same with the playgrounds,” said Brown. “We’ve gotten more involved with seniors in the community and I think continuing to expand those programs is a great idea.”
