Garden Court Apartments broke ground for a 14-apartment complex in LaPaz on a blustery Thursday afternoon. The new complex was made possible with around $1.5 million in funds from the United State Department of Housing and Urban Development.
“Part of the vision of the Garden Court projects is to make housing available to people close to home so that they don’t have to go somewhere else to live,” said President of the Garden Court Board of Directors Ron Liechty. “We now have a Garden Court in every community in Marshall County except for Culver. We hope to have that taken care of soon. We will be turning in the application for Culver this month and hopefully within a year we’ll be breaking ground there.” The LaPaz project was brought together with help from the Town Board of LaPaz, instrumental in the project, and the LaPaz Church of God which made the land available to purchase for the project. “This is a wonderful project,” said Sheryl Anderson, representing Congressman Joe Donnelly at the groundbreaking who was unable to leave Washington. “I work with Joe on senior case management and I am very passionate about any projects having to do with seniors.” The Marshall County Community Foundation was also an instrumental part of the funding for the project. Kevin Berger of Easterday Construction said the project should be completed by September of next year. Those wishing to be on the waiting list for the LaPaz apartments can sign up at the LaPaz Town office or at the LaPaz Church of God. There are income guidelines for tenants and each application will be screened by Real Estate Management Corporation, which manages all Garden Court locations. Liechty said there is a waiting list for all Garden Court apartments of 166 seniors, mostly in the Plymouth area. There are currently none yet for this particular site in LaPaz.
