PHS junior class to raise money for prom E-mail
Friday, 02 October 2009
By Ida Chipman Correspondent
PLYMOUTH — Meagan Barron, president of the junior class at Plymouth High School, and Lindsay Renz are spearheading a magazine subscription sale drive in order to raise funds for the 2010 senior prom to be held April 24 at the Century Center in South Bend.
Traditionally, it is the junior class that puts on the prom for the graduating seniors.
“We’re doing it a little differently this year,” Meagan said. “Before it was an all-school fundraiser. This year we are looking to just the junior class to raise the money.”
Lindsay pointed out that by just having the juniors sell or re-new the magazine subscriptions it will prevent families with multiple students being hit with several sellers.
Meagan said that their goal was one subscription per junior. With 275 in the junior class, “we should do all right.”
People Magazine is the most popular seller, followed by Sports Illustrated and The Reader’s Digest.
If a student does not contact someone, a buyer can go to qsp.com, click on Ply-mouth High School and order from there. CDs are also available.
An incentive for the sellers are free tickets to the prom. Twenty magazines earn two tickets and 15 magazines sold will get the seller one free ticket, worth at least $20.
“Our strategy,” Meagan said “is to work on a personal note and hit the relatives.”
The committee talked about other fundraisers, but decided that selling or renewing subscriptions is the best fit.
They need to raise between $3 and $4,000. At least.
Meagan is the daughter of John and Betsy Meagan: She hopes to attend the United States Naval Academy after her 2011 graduation and Lindsay, the daughter of Greg and Mercy Renz, plans to attend Notre Dame.
