John Glenn High School has pulled out all the stops for this weekend as they will be hosting the first Fall-O-Ween Fest on the campus Friday through Sunday in Walkerton.
“It’s really quite a shocking thing to see how impressive this is,” said Glenn Principal William Morton. “I’m looking out my window at a 75-foot ferris wheel in the parking lot and that’s really something.” The festival has a something for everybody over the weekend. The weekend will include the Skerbeck Carnival Midway in the school parking lot and free games and a raffle for children. The FFA will hold an open house for its new greenhouse and will be selling mums and offering hayrides. The FCCLA will host a garage sale of donated items in the shop area. “The whole idea was to raise money for scholarships,” said Morton. “In today’s world it’s essential that students go to college for that extra edge. We felt like we do a lot of fundraising during the year and this might be a way to do it all at once. Schools are kind of a hub of a community and this allows community groups to be involved too.” An abundance of food will be available, beginning with a hog roast Friday evening; biscuits and gravy breakfast, port-a-pit chicken, ham, beans and chili will be available Saturday and a pancake breakfast will be offered Sunday. Homemade apple dump-lings will be available Friday and Saturday, and homemade potato donuts Saturday. “The story of the apple butter is really something,” said Morton. “They’ll begin cooking it on Saturday morning and then sell it later that afternoon. The whole thing really reminds me of the historic American country festival.” On Saturday, the movie "Blast," will be shown in the school auditorium at 4 p.m. for all ages, and a comedy night will be held at 7 p.m. featuring Brett Eastburn, a John Glenn graduate previously featured on CNN and the Bob and Tom Show, John Osborne of 95.3 WAOR, and Improv Troupe. An outdoor stage will feature music by Steve Foresman and other local bands, a magician, Tae Kwon Do demonstrations and Children’s Theatre. For those interested in competitions, there will be a 3-on-3 basketball tourney; 5K Rocket Race run, bed races, and an Ultimate Frisbee tourney. “The outpouring of groups willing to help has just been fantastic,” said Morton. “I’m actually a little stunned at the number of organizations that have come on to lend a hand.” Parking will be available on the John Glenn High School parking lots, at the Walkerton Parks Department lot and First Presbyterian Church. Both of these lots offer Tram Service for $.25 per person. There will be free parking at Walkerton Elementary and Urey Middle Schools. Both of these lots offer free bus service to the festival. Call John Glenn High School at 574-586-3195 to sign up or for more information.
