Simpson crowned 2009 Apple Blossom E-mail
Thursday, 24 September 2009
By Mandy McFarland Editor
NAPPANEE — Seven girls are representing Nappanee this year as the 2009 Apple Blossom Court, led by queen Courtney Simpson and princesses Jennifer Miller (first runner-up) and Ashley Holdeman (second runner-up).
The Apple Blossom Scholarship Pageant took place Thursday evening, Sept. 17 as one of several evening events kicking off the four-day Nappanee Apple Festival. With Country Rock band Bootleg entertaining, the girls first introduced themselves in Western garb. Emcee Jeff Kitson officially introduced each contestant as she walked in on the arm of her escort and dressed in her formal gown. The contestants then read essays that they composed reminiscing about why the Apple Festival is important to each of them.

Blossom Queen Courtney Simpson is no stranger to the pageant scene. Many may remember her from her victory two years ago as the Elkhart County 4-H Fair Queen. With this background, Simpson brings much experience to her role as Miss Apple Blossom. She also looks forward to representing her own hometown over the next year in festivals and parades.
“I’ve never done a pageant that has been my own hometown,” she said.
Simpson hopes to serve as a role model to younger generations of Nappanee girls who may be watching as she performs her duties.
“I just think a quiet role model is the best way to go,” she said. “You don’t have to be flashy. Little eyes are just always watching.”
First Runner-up Jennifer Miller had fun participating this year, and feels the pageant has given her more confidence. She reminds all girls to “just be yourself. Don’t let others judge who you are.”
Second Runner-up Ashley Holdeman also enjoyed participating.
“Getting to spend time with my friends in a different way,” she said, naming one highlight of her experience.
Simpson, Miller and Holdeman, along with their court, made various appearances throughout the festival, helped at contests and various events and greeted the crowd from their float in the parade.
Simpson received a $1,000 scholarship, while Miller and Holdeman received $750 and $500 scholarships, respectively.
Judging for Miss Apple Blossom is based on biographical information (25 points), an essay (45 points), a personal interview with judges (50 points) and overall stage presence (80 points).
