By Rusty Nixon Correspondent PLYMOUTH — The old adage encourages us to take things one day at a time. The Rebuilding Together program takes that literally. Rebuilding Together is a local organization made of volunteers for the skilled crafts, churches, clubs, employer groups and business who donate their time, talent and materials to assist those in need. The program brings together these volunteers to renovate homes of those who have a need. “Ideally the project will take one day,” said Dean Byers who heads up the project. “We choose homes around Marshall County of the elderly, the disabled or families with children and then go to work to renovate them.” The program is at no cost to the homeowner. The goal is to leave each project home warm, safe and dry. Homeowners must submit applications for the project and there home will be considered.
“Applicants must fall in the category of 50 percent of the federal median income. There’s no other restriction to apply,” said Byers. “We’ll go out and do an assessment of the home to make sure the work can actually be done by volunteers and when we pick our homes we have an open house to invite prospective groups to come out and pick their project.” Local churches, clubs and groups will choose their home, acting as “project manager” for the site and then supply the manpower to complete the project. Rebuilding Together is now accepting applications for the annual one-day repair fix up program scheduled for the last Saturday in April 2008. Applications are available from Marshall County Housing Authority, Marshall County Council on Aging and the Clerk/Treasurers’ Offices in all the Marshall County communities. Application deadline is Dec. 1. The group would also be happy to hear from any individuals or groups wishing to volunteer their time for the project. Interested parties can call Dean Byers at 574-952-4214.
