By Mandy McFarland Editor NAPPANEE — Over the past few weeks the parking situation outside Woodview Elementary School has changed dramatically. At its regular meeting Monday evening, Aug. 24, the Nappanee Board of Public Works and Safety heard concerns from Police Chief Mike Anglin concerning traffic conditions in the Woodview area immediately before and after school hours.
According Anglin, parents picking up and dropping off their students at Woodview Elementary School would often park across the busy street to do so. This was creating a blind spot for students, who had to dart through the congested school traffic to get to their parents’ vehicles. Another concern was that the parked vehicles were blocking the bicycle path coming out of Maple Lane, creating an inconvenience and a potential hazard for cyclists traveling through. The hazards became apparent just this year, and Anglin said this is the first time anything like this has been reported at Woodview. “It just came to our attention this year,” Anglin said. “So I don’t know if it was a previous problem or not.” In response to the concerns, the Nappanee Police Department has designated the area a no-parking zone Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. They have also designated a crosswalk area for the safety of students who walk to and from school. In other news •The Nappanee Fire Department will again hold its annual Boot Drive for MDA Saturday, Sept. 5. Firefighters will gather downtown and collect donations from passing drivers and pedestrians. •The regularly-scheduled meeting of the Nappanee Common Council has changed from Monday, Sept. 7 to Tuesday, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. in observance of Labor Day.
