Plymouth Country Club Superintendent Ryan Cummings, left, and PCC’s PGA Professional Chad Hutsell hold the bronze plaque that will be prominently displayed at the 86-year-old golf course commemorating the late Payne Stewart’s course record 63 scored 30 years ago – before the PGA legend turned pro. This year is also the tenth anniversary of Stewart’s death in a plane crash. Pilot photo/Rick Kreps PLYMOUTH — Plymouth Country Club hosted its first Payne Stewart Memorial Par 3 Tournament earlier this month, raised $500 for a Marshall County golf scholarship – and secured a bronze plaque honoring Stewart.
The late Payne Stewart, a PGA golfing legend and holder of three major championships, shot the PCC course record from the back tees during a visit to Plymouth in the summer of 1979. Stewart’s back tee record 63 on the par-72 golf course came during an Indiana vacation to visit long-time friend and fellow Southern Meth-odist University golfer Dave Hampton, formerly of Argos. Both had just completed their senior years in college. The plaque, to be erected near the 17th tee station, reads: “In Memoriam, Payne Stewart, 1957-1999. “In the summer of 1979, Payne hit driver from near this location over the green en route to making a birdie 3 and scoring a course record 63.”
