By Rusty Nixon Correspondent PLYMOUTH — One Plymouth singer found that surfing the net can help your career. Country/Gospel singer Kali Rose of Plymouth has been named the singer of the month by the Web site SingerUniverse (www.singer-universe.com) for her performance of the song “Through the Valley,” written by Kelly Archer, Jeff Silvey and Jeramy Stover.
The song is featured on Rose’s most recent album “Brand New Day” that was independently released in January of 2008 and produced by Silvey. “I was really surprised,” said Rose of the honor. “The web site is run by Dale Kawashima who is pretty involved in the music business and has worked with Michael Jackson among others so I really feel quite honored.” Kawashima was creative director for Sony Music Publishing in Los Angeles. Prior to his position at Sony, Kawashima was president of Michael Jackson's ATV Music, and he has also represented the song catalogs of Bruce Springs-teen, Prince, Bob Dylan, the Beatles, Motown and Burt Bacharach. The writer of Kali’s song, Jeff Silvey, is a family friend as well as a Dove Award-winning musician in his own right. Kali said that his input on the choice was essential. “He gave me some songs to look at and (Through the Valley) was one of them,” she said. “It’s a really uplifting and inspirational song with a beautiful melody.” Once Silvey added musicians Mike Johnson, Gordon Mote, Troy Lancaster, and Chad Cromwell, the track really came together. Kali performs live throughout the Midwest and with two small daughters — Kila, age 2, and Ellia, age 5 — the schedule can get pretty hectic. Fortunately husband Eric hits the road as well and the family has some time together. “The girls come out on stage with me during the show and we sing some songs together,” said Kali. “I think they really love to sing. Ellia especially. She knows all the Hannah Montana songs — and mine too, of course.” Kali says tours are a little like a family vacation. The family has seen a lot of sights throughout the Midwest thanks to her singing. One sight is a must. “Wherever we stay there has to be a swimming pool,” said Kali with a laugh. “That’s essential.” Like any artist, Kali hopes that her honor will lead to bigger and better things. She has everything in perspective. “(Dale Kawashima) has his own publishing company and he’s gotten deals for other singers, hopefully that will happen for me,” she said. But if not where does she see herself in the next five years? “I see myself continuing to sing gospel and country music. We’ll see how it goes. Maybe my daughters will be having their own concerts by then too.”
