KINGSBURY — A Knox man died after falling out of a moving pickup truck on U.S. 35 on Monday, July 6. Michael Sadowski, 44, of Knox died Wednesday, July 8 at Memorial Hospital in South Bend, where he was airlifted following the accident.
According to LaPorte County police, Sadowski was asleep in a pickup truck driven by his wife, Janie Campbell, who picked him up after he completed the midnight shift at his maintenance job. The accident occurred about 7:45 a.m. They were on U.S. 35 heading to their home in Knox. Campbell told police Sadowski suddenly woke up and appeared startled. He then opened the passenger side door and stepped out. According to police, a witness saw Sadowski’s head hit the pavement and saw him flip over and over before coming to rest on the side of the highway. Campbell told police Sadowski had sleep apnea and received just four hours sleep the entire weekend before reporting for work. A friend of the family, Patricia Weathers of LaPorte. said Campbell drove him to and from work because of the medical condition that would cause him to suddenly fall asleep. Funeral services were held Saturday, July 11.
