New hardware store added in Argos E-mail
Friday, 10 July 2009
By Rusty Nixon Correspondent
ARGOS — The town of Argos will soon have a place to take care of its hardware needs.
Construction has begun on a new “Do It Best Hardware” store that will be adjacent to the Argos Electronics and Mr. Trophy building.
Work began a little over a week ago, and owner Jon VanDerWeele hopes the store will be ready to open in September. His son Mark will be the store manager. Jon will continue to run Mr. Trophy and the Electronics store.
“Mark will be running the hardware store,” said VanDerWeele, adding with a laugh, “I’m good but I’m not that good.”
The idea for the store was historical.
“We’ve been working on getting things going for a couple of years now,” said Jon. “Really one reason we started thinking about it was that Argos is where the National Hardware Association was founded in the early 1900s. Reader’s Digest came through town doing a story back in the mid 1980s about that.”
VanDerWeele also seems undaunted by the stories of woe in the economy. “It’s a gamble, but everything in life is a gamble,” he said.
