By Carol Anders Correspondent PLYMOUTH — The Plymouth School Board voted unanimously Thursday to renew the contracts of Superintendent Daniel Tyree and Assistant Superintendent Rodger Smith. The contracts were extended for a three-year period; however, there was no increase in salaries.
Tyree did receive additional vacation days, extending the days from 15 to 20. Todd Samuelson, board member, cited Tyree’s positive relationship with the PEA (Plymouth Education Association) and his relationship with staff. Board member Larry Pinkerton echoed the comments saying “I appreciate the work that Dan (Tyree) has done and his vision.” Melissa Christiansen, also a board member, said the focus has been on what is best for children. Board President Frank Brubaker called Smith a “great asset” to the schools. School patron, Dare Hawes, did ask the board to table the contract for Tyree, but she was gaveled down after both Samuelson and Brubaker advised her that she was speaking off topic. Hawes attempted to talk to the board about accusations that the board covering up administrators allegedly committing “illegal acts of computer tampering on our public school computers,” Hawes said. “An independent investigation of this grievous issue, as has been repeatedly requested of this board for the past 21 months.” Hawes asked the board to either “exonerate your administrators, or prove their guilt.” She added, “Then, and only then, should discussion regarding the present superintendent’s contract take place.” In other matters • The board voted 5-0 to contract with the Integration Group concerning audits of communication billing. Speaking for the company was Curt Feece and Dan Sullivan. Feece said they have found that 80 percent of the cases they have audited had over billed. Feece said, “Venders do not necessarily over bill intentionally.” Feece indicated that they have not worked with public entities, but have experience with private companies. Integration will receive no up-front payments. However, if they discover any overcharges or overpayments, they will receive a 50 percent contingency fee of any refunds. Refunds will be sent directly to the school corporation and Integration Group will bill the schools at that point. The board had heard a presentation by the Discovery Group who offer similar services at an earlier meeting. Assistant Superintendent Rodger Smith said, “Quite frankly, I like to spend dollars locally.” The next meeting is scheduled for July 9 at 7 p.m. in the Administration Board Room on Berkley Street in Plymouth.
