Pilot Photo/Sara O’Connor By Sara O’Connor Correspondent WALKERTON — What does an electric California Roadster have in common with pizza? Ask Kevin O’Connor, founder of Memories Pizza in Walkerton. He’s saving dough. And no, not the kind for topping. O’Connor purchased a bright yellow 1933 Ford replica about a month ago. “I didn’t want to pay for gas anymore,” he said.
The small car, which travels anywhere between 25 to 30 miles per hour, is generally used for making pizza deliveries around town. “But even that little bit helps,” he said. Not only does delivering pizza in fashion save on gas, it has also become something of a spectacle in town. “I get toots, looks and questions all the time,” he said, “or people wanting a ride.” But before the idea of a cute compact car, and long before Memories Pizza opened its doors, O’Connor recalled the birthplace of a dream for establishing his own pizzeria: “When working at Chuck E. Cheese 25 years ago,” he said. The idea remained with him ever since, until four years ago when the dream finally became reality. “I got tired of my real job and wanted to give the kids business experience,” he said. Today, it has become a family affair, in which five of his seven children help maintain the family business. “I like it a lot,” said daughter, Crystal, 16. “You get to hang around a lot of people; that’s my favorite part about it.” “I talk easier with people now,” said Carissa, 20, when asked of the experiences gained from a family business. Little brother Donald, 14, agrees: “Working is not as easy as it looks,” he said, “but it’s easier to talk to people than it used to be.” If you don’t have a taste for pizza, Memories will also deliver anything on the menu. If you are simply just not hungry, but instead want to feast your eyes on a “saucy” set of wheels, O’Connor will be showing off his new ride in the Walkerton parade Friday, July 3 at 7:30 p.m. Walkerton 4th of July Festival Schedule of Events Thursday, July 2 — carnival opens Friday, July 3 — parade 7:30 p.m.; sidewalk coloring, 8 p.m. (following the parade) Saturday, July 4 — 5K express run/walk 8 a.m.; All-Star baseball (transition, 9:30 a.m., tee-Ball, 11 a.m. and minor, 12 p.m.); All-Star softball (minor, 4 p.m. and major, 6 p.m.); entertainment, 6:30 p.m.; fireworks at dusk Sunday, July 5 — Walkerton Vol. Fire Dept.
