By Rusty Nixon Correspondent PLYMOUTH — Those athletes wishing to fight cancer will now be able to run for a cure. Ounce of Prevention-Breast Cancer Awareness is looking for runners to take part in the first “Ta Ta Trot” benefitting the Nancy Jaynes Memorial Scholarship.
The event will take place Saturday, Aug. 1 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. There will be a 1-mile kids fun-run, a 5K and a 10K. Meanwhile Oliver Ford will be holding an event with a little something for everyone. “It’s going to be kind of a carnival,” said Jen Houin, organizer with Ounce of Prevention and Oliver Ford. “We’ve got one of those bouncy things and a rock wall for the kids. The St. Joseph Regional Medical Center Mobile Medical unit will be there doing screenings. And Carl Edwards’ #99 NASCAR will be there on display. We’re even going to have a fish fry.” The event has grown out of the popular Ounce of Prevention event with its annual golf outing and auction. “I got the idea talking with Chaz Glaub on the telephone,” said Houin. “I’ve never met him, but he’s Nancy’s (Jayne) oldest son and he lives in California. He just called out of the blue to thank us for what we do for his mom’s memory. We talked a little about running because it’s something that he likes to do and I thought a run in her memory would be a great idea.” It also met another need. “It lets us offer something to a different set of people,” said Houin. “We have runners and athletes all the time coming in wanting to know what they can do to help out. This offers and event, but all the runners want pink running shirts including the men. I’ve called about 20 different companies and I can’t find pink running shirts anywhere.” The dri-fit commemorative event shirts are also available to anybody making a $25 donation. The fastest male and female runner will win a free vacation. You can pre-register for the race at Oliver Ford or Overmyer Soft Water. If you would like more information you can call Oliver Ford at 1-800-448-8292 or visit the Web site at http://plymouthounceofprevention.org/.
