First H1N1 clinic moves smoothly

By Rusty Nixon Correspondent
PLYMOUTH — For most it is a strange sight to see. Literally hundreds of children, lined up down the block from an elementary school hoping to get a shot.
That was the unlikely scene at Washington School in Plymouth last night as The Marshall County Health Department held its first H1N1 flu shot clinic. In spite of the large numbers that turned out and the trickle of vaccine into the county, the department didn’t have to turn anyone away. Everyone who came received an inoculation.

PLYMOUTH — The eighth annual “Ride for United Way” is scheduled for Saturday, June 27.
“Enjoy a fun day and support your local United Way at the same time,” said Executive Director Jennifer Maddox.

The motorcycle ride registration begins at 9 a.m. at CJ Chrome & Cycle, 6770 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.
CJ Chrome & Cycle will provide coffee and donuts. A brief riders’ meeting will be held at 9:45 a.m.
Riders will leave CJ Chrome beginning at 10 a.m. and travel throughout Marshall County on a 62-mile route.
Last year, 90 motorcycles with 130 total riders rode through LaPaz, Bre-men, Bourbon, Argos, Culver and Plymouth to raise awareness for the United Way of Marshall County.
This year’s route, again starting at CJ Chrome & Cycle, will travel north on Michigan, west on 6A road, northwest on Plymouth-LaPorte Trail, north on Tamarack, east on U.S. 6 and then 106 through Bremen, south on S.R. 331 with a stop at Journey’s End in Bourbon.
The ride will continue south until turning east on S.R. 10 to Argos, then south on Michigan Road to S.R. 110 then east to Culver, north on S.R. 17 past Mystic Hills Golf Course, Lake Maxinkuckee and Culver Academies.
“We will continue riding north on 17 through Burr Oak, turning east on 12th road, then north on Nutmeg, west on Glen Overmyer and northeast on 17 again to the Moose Family Center in Plymouth, where the ride will end,” Maddox said. “Pizzas donated by Papa’s in Culver will be served. In addition, there will be other food items, music, a cash bar, door prizes, and a silent auction.”
Each participant will receive a United Way T-shirt.
Admission is $25 per pilot (driver) and $10 per co-pilot (passenger).  Non-riders can join the group for lunch at the Moose Family Center at 1 p.m. at a cost of $5 per person. This is a family friendly event — children are welcome.
Again this year, United Way leadership will ride with founder and event chair Cindy Rash. Those riding include: Maddox, Vickie Talcott, 2007-08 Board President; Ed Ruiz, 2008 Campaign Chair; and Brad Serf, 2007 Campaign Chair.
Rash originated the annual awareness ride following her tenure on the United Way board.
“I love the ride and the people who come out to support United Way.  I have a passion for United Way and want to spread the word about all the good United Way does in Marshall County!”
Maddox added “This is a great way for us to let the public know about the mission of the United Way campaign and those who benefit from the community donations.”
About the United Way
“The United Way of Mar-shall County is creating lasting changes by advancing the common good. We invest in the building blocks for a good life: Education, Income and Health. In 2008 the United Way served 24,290 people in Marshall County! We invite you to be part of the change. Together, united, we can inspire hope and create opportunities for a better tomorrow.  When we reach out a hand to one, we influence the condition of all.  That’s what it means to Live United,” said Mad-dox.
