By Mandy McFarland Enquirer Coordinator BREMEN — In a world of ever-increasing environmental awareness, six Bremen High School students pitched in last Thursday, May 20 to do a little maintenance work along the shoreline of Lake of the Woods.
They were among 14 students taking Chad Berger’s Natural Resources class this trimester at BHS. The students gathered in the morning for a presentation by Ryan Allison of JF New, an ecological consulting firm in Walkerton. Allison briefed the students on the basics of non-native and invasive species and environmental maintenance before the group headed down to the shoreline to do cleanup work. Allison pointed out non-native plants and weeds for the students to pull versus what to leave alone, and the group set to work. The students worked in conjunction with the Bremen Conservation Club, who lent their building for the presentation. Members of the conservation club were present to help oversee the cleanup, as well. Berger teaches the Natural Resources class every year during the fall and spring trimesters. Aside from the lake cleanup, the class has also participated in water quality studies, studied soil and erosion, completed a wildlife habitat evaluation program and many other projects.
