PLYMOUTH — The best young athletes in the area will test their endurance again this year as part of the fifth annual kidsBIGred3 Triathlon event in Centennial Park on July 27.
The event has been a big help to many kids over the years to fund various projects around the park.
“All proceeds collected go to the Plymouth Park Department,” said Gina Young the event’s organizer

“Actually I think we’ve raised over $35,000 over the years and we’ve helped purchase the rock climbing wall, we helped pay for the electric sign and helped fund some of the groundbreaking on the Greenways Trail.”
This year’s money will be partially earmarked for another special project.
“We’d like to see a ‘Splash Pad’ here — and last year we started a fund for that,” said Young. “That’s probably going to cost around $100,000 to finally fund, so a part of the money from this year will be earmarked for that fund. For the rest we’re going to have to find out what the park needs and we’ll put it there.”
Check-in is at 8 a.m. and the race begins at 9 a.m. The event is for children ages 5-12. The Triathlon consists of a 25 meter swim, .5 mile bike ride and a .5 mile run. One parent may run with the child.
There will be a mandatory practice run and safety check for participants on June 7 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Plymouth Pool.
Children are asked to collect pledges and every $50.00 in pledges will get an entry into the grand-prize drawing. Prizes will also be given away to the top pledge winner and collector. All proceeds benefit the Plymouth Park and Recreation Department.
The event traditionally gathers many participants and volunteers.
“We’ve run about 100 participants almost every year,” said Young. “With them and their parents and all our volunteers, it can be pretty hectic around here. The fire department will be there to spray water at the finish just like last year and the Plymouth High School athletic teams all send volunteers to help out.’
The event is always interested in more volunteers and sponsors.
“The more sponsors we have the more we can do for the kids,” said Young.
If you have not registered yet, or are interested in more information please pick up a registration form at the Plymouth Park Department Office, go to www.kidsBIGred3.com to register online or call Gina Young at 574-780-0333.
