PLYMOUTH — Members of Plymouth High School’s fine arts department are getting a chance to stretch their creative muscles again this weekend.
The school’s annual Variety Show, that features the band, choir and theatre departments at PHS, will take the stage Friday, May 1 and Saturday, May 2 with the doors open at 7 p.m. and show starting at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $7 at the door. This year’s theme is “Welcome to the Jungle.” The show is a PHS favorite that traces it’s origins back into the 1960’s.

“Mr. (Bryan) Ames (PHS Band Director) came up with the theme and then we built the show around that,” said Charlotte Tyree, one of the directors of the show. “The kids all came up with their musical pieces, wrote the sketches, cast their own bits, and then they auditioned them.”
The directors did make a few suggestions.
“We have so many kids involved that we did make some casting suggestions,” said Tyree. “It was just one of those things where we wanted to be sure everybody got in the show.”
The show includes a montage of music written by PHS students, Nicole Beguin with her solo piece on guitar, Courtney Harris and Parker Miller with pieces they wrote for piano and a guitar trio written and sung by Rick Elm.
“It’s one of the first pieces I ever wrote and I really like it,” said Miller. “It’s one of my favorites to play. I like the way it moves.”
Miller’s first musical memory was an interesting one.
“It’s probably of my dad teaching me to play piano at my grandfather’s house,” he said. “He didn’t really know how to play either but he taught me by putting AAA batteries on the keyboard where I was supposed to play.”
Veteran of the Plymouth stage Rick Elm, has been a fixture backstage, but occasionally has come out of the wings to share his music.
“Writing is actually a snapshot of you at that moment,” said Elm. “I really like the idea of sharing where you were at a given moment in your life.”
His influences musically are varied and classic.
“I’d never go anywhere without the Beatles and Bob Marley, I can say that,” said Elm. “I’m really influenced by reggae and ’60s music like Jim Morrison and the Doors.”
