BREMEN — High wind and rain dictated the play, and its impact was even greater considering the inexperience of the field, but most coaches were pleased with what they saw from their underclassmen.
Chesterton carded two top 10 and three top 15 scores — including co-individual low medalist Adam VanderZanden, who shot a 79 to tie with Culver Military’s T.J. Selby for best round of the day —  to win the team competition with a 345 at the 21-team meet, while CMA came in at 359 to finish fourth.
Plymouth came in eighth with a 388, Triton placed 13th with a 405, LaVille was 18th with a 488, and Glenn fielded just three eligible players to finish without an official score at the 28th annual LaVille Freshman-Sophomore Boys Golf Tournament Saturday.
The winds registered as high as 40 miles per hour, and after a week of rain at Sprig O’ Mint, the greens were saturated and slow, two factors that combined to play havoc with the young golfers’ scores at the tilt. Following a 40-minute delay due to especially ominous-looking weather late in the morning, the weather began to improve and play resumed, and most golfers were able to shave some strokes off their front-side performances.

The Pilgrims shot a 199 coming into the turn but were able to shave 10 strokes off on the back nine and 23 total strokes off the team’s top four scores. John Ruff cut 10 strokes off his morning performance to finish with a 96 for the round, while Lane Singleton and A.J. Ruffing turned in consistent 94s for the day. Jordan Wendel, who has recently been battling illness, finished with a 104  to round out Plymouth’s score.
“The conditions today really dictated a lot,” said Plymouth boys golf head coach Ben Waymouth. “It’s difficult conditions when it’s 40 miles per hour blowing, and you’ve got holes where you’re going directly into that wind. It was a 3-club wind for part of the day today, and our kids had to really fight that, but under the conditions I’m very pleased with the guys’ scores today.”
Bremen’s front and back nine scores also reflected the change in weather conditions, as the freshmen and sophomore Lions cut 15 strokes off their morning scores to finish the round at 406. Thomas Manges turned in a 48 after a rough front nine, but was still forced to card a 109 given his 61 in the morning, while Justin Corl shaved four strokes off to finish with a team-low 96.
“The wind was ferocious, and that just throws our kids off a little bit,” said Bremen coach Lon Kipfer. “They’re young, and they just kind of have a hard time understanding the wind and how to play the wind.
“We probably improved 20 strokes just from the front nine to the back nine, so that’s always good,” he added. “It’s encouraging. It means they didn’t give up. I like to see that.”
Triton’s young troop had trouble putting their morning scores behind them even once conditions improved, carding respective front and back team tallies of 190 and 183.
“You get a bad feeling or a bad attitude to start with,  it’s kind of hard to break it unless you’re shooting good golf,” said Triton golf coach Dave Carpenter. “With the way the wind was blowing this morning you weren’t going to shoot a lot of pars and birdies to make yourself feel better.”
Saturday’s weather didn’t seem to bother CMA’s Selby, however.
The sophomore fired off two straight birdies on nine and 10 to start the day and carded another one on the par 4 17th hole to finish with a 79 and co-low medalist honors for the day.
“Lately I’ve been getting off to some bad starts,” Selby said. “My first tournament of the year I went double bogey, double bogey, and the next couple tournaments I started out double bogey. I just started picturing myself playing some holes in my mind to get the groove going. I started doing that, and it really helped me out. I’ve birdied the first hole several times this year already, so it helps.”
Selby was one of three top 20 CMA scores at the LaVille tourney as Michael Geiger turned in an 88 to place 16th in the individual standings and Gary Fan’s 90 was good enough for 20th.
“We came to play, but the weather conditions were unexpected,” said CMA coach Ellen Ollett. “They were windy, rainy. When the wind died down everybody started playing better, but then it really picked up again this afternoon. The kids played well, but not as well as they expected to play.”
Although Glenn was unable to field a full team of freshmen and sophomores Saturday, several Falcons carded competitive scores.  Adam Anspaugh and Travis Weist turned in respective scores of 82 and 86 to earn top 20 honors at the meet, while Justin Wesolowski carded a 110 as Glenn’s only other eligible player.
The LaVille tournament is unique in the state of Indiana with respect to its exclusively freshman-sophomore format.
Seeing the need for tournament-style competition for his younger players, LaVille coach and tournament director Steve Read started the annual event in 1981, and it’s been growing ever since. Saturday’s competition featured 21 total teams from across the state.
“I had a very good team in 1981,” said Read. “I had 24 kids on the team, and I decided they needed to play in more tournaments, so I started this tournament. We won it back then. We had success early and we needed to play tournament golf. There weren’t many invitationals back in the 1980s... No one has a freshman-sophomore tournament, and it’s been very successful.”
Waymouth, who’s been taking his young players to the tourney throughout his tenure as Plymouth’s head coach, said the LaVille tournament provides a valuable opportunity for underclassmen players to mix it up with their peers and see how they compare.
“We’ve been in this tournament every year that I’ve been coach, and I like this tournament,” he said. “It gives the kids the experience they need to get into the NLC conference. It’s a very level playing field because they only take freshmen and sophomores, and it allows kids to really see against kids their own age where they stack up.”
