BREMEN/KNOX — Federal officials raided multiple medical offices and homes last week as part of a major healthcare fraud investigation. U.S. Attorney Donald Schmid told the media last Wednesday, April 15 that U.S. Marshals planned to search multiple locations throughout the day, including Doctors Hospital of Bremen and the Knox home of Cameron Gilbert. Gilbert, CEO and president of Doctors Hospital in Bremen, also has a home in Mishawaka that is being raided, along with the South Bend home of Jamie Gottlieb, an orthopedic surgeon and founder of i-Spine Institute in Elkhart, which is being searched as well.
Gottlieb also has an ownership connection with Doctors Hospital. "We believe that the inquiry will show that Doctors Hospital and Neuromuscular Center has followed all rules and regulations regarding medicare and medicaid services," Gilbert said. The week before, Gilbert announced that Starke Memorial Hospital in Knox would be named Doctors Hospital Starke. Starke Memorial Hospital is in the process of being sold to Physicians Hospital System, a network of care with 10 service lines in Northern Indiana. The system includes Doctors Hospital and Neuromuscular Hospital in Bremen, RiverCrest Specialty Hospital in Mishawaka, and Unity Surgical Arts in Mishawaka. It was announced in March that Physicians Hospital System, in partnership with Clarian Health System, purchased Starke Memorial, the licensed, 53-bed, acute-care hospital in Knox. Gilbert said with that announcement: ”Although we have long range plans for the hospital, we want the community to see positive and significant change from day one. Providing health care in a rural area is a challenge in these economic times but I am confident Starke Memorial will benefit from our position and the relationship with LaPorte Regional Health System." Gilbert, who served as CEO for Starke Memorial when it was owned by Province Healthcare in 2002, explained, "It is time for a name change, as well. Our delivery of service is patient focused and physician driven. The name 'Doctors Hospital' sends that message loud and clear, as we continue to serve the Starke area and surrounding communities.” Schmid said the fraud investigation focuses on Medicare cases, involving several state and federal agencies, and cases with the Indiana Attorney General’s Office, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Food and Drug Administration and the FBI. The investigation has been ongoing for more than a year, according to Schmid.
