BY MAGGIE NIXON MANAGING EDITOR KNOX/BREMEN — Federal officials raided multiple medical offices and homes on Wednesday, April 15 as part of a major healthcare fraud investigation. U.S. Attorney Donald Schmid told the media Wednesday that U.S. Marshals planned to search multiple locations throughout the day, including Doctors Hospital of Bremen and the Knox home of Cameron Gilbert. Gilbert, CEO and president of Doctors Hospital in Bremen, and newly named CEO of Starke Memorial Hospital (SMH) in Knox, also has a home in Mishawaka that was raided, along with the South Bend home of Jamie Gottlieb, an orthopedic surgeon and founder of i-Spine Institute in Elkhart, which was also searched. Gottlieb also has an ownership connection with Doctors Hospital.
Gilbert is president and CEO of four hospitals at this time; however, he will be running the day-to-day operations at SMH. And currently, he doesn’t foresee any problems arising from the investigation that will affect the purchasing process of the Knox facility. “We want to see this resolved quickly and we are going forward with our preparations to begin operations at Starke Memorial May 1,” Gilbert said. According to Gilbert, Doctors Hospital and Neuromuscular Center has not done anything illegal. “We believe that the inquiry will show that Doctors Hospital and Neuromuscular Center has followed all rules and regulations regarding Medicare and Medicaid services,” he said. Gilbert, a resident of Starke County, said he’s very interested in the SMH’s success, and enjoys living in the area. Recently, it was announced by Gilbert that SMH would be named Doctors Hospital Starke on May 1. At that time, SMH was in the process of being sold to Physicians Hospital System, a network of care with 10 service lines in Northern Indiana. The system includes Doctors Hospital and Neuromuscular Hospital in Bremen, RiverCrest Specialty Hospital in Mishawaka, and Unity Surgical Arts in Mishawaka. Since then, however, It’s been announced that Physicians Hospital System, in partnership with Clarian Health System, purchased SMH, the 53-licensed bed acute-care hospital in Knox. Gilbert said with that announcement: “Although we have long range plans for the hospital, we want the community to see positive and significant change from day one. Providing health care in a rural area is a challenge in these economic times, but I am confident Starke Memorial will benefit from our position and the relationship with LaPorte Regional Health System.” Gilbert, who served as CEO for Starke Memorial when it was owned by Province Healthcare in 2002, explained, “It is time for a name change, as well. Our delivery of service is patient focused and physician driven. The name ‘Doctors Hospital’ sends that message loud and clear, as we continue to serve the Starke area and surrounding communities.” Schmid said the fraud investigation focuses on Medicare cases, involving several state and federal agencies, and cases with the Indiana Attorney General’s Office, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Food and Drug Administration and the FBI. The investigation has been ongoing for more than a year, according to Schmid. Leader Staff Writer Cheryl Patrick contributed to this story
