By Rusty Nixon Correspondent PLYMOUTH — Unique experiences just seem to keep mounting up for Plymouth High School’s Kasey Greer. Not only is she the first winner from Plymouth ever, for the prestigious Wells Scholarship from Indiana University, she is only the third person from PHS ever even granted an interview for the prize. And she even became the first to have a particular experience at that interview. “The professor that was supposed to interview me didn’t show up,” she said. “It’s the first time in the history of the scholarship, I guess, that that has happened.” The reward for that? “I got to be interviewed by the director of the program. He is a physics professor and I’m definitely humanities. I was kind of anxious.”
Obviously things turned out well for Kasey, as she found out a week later. “They promised they would call us the next Sunday no matter what,” she said. “The call came and it started with, ‘I just want to tell you how much we enjoyed talking with you last week…’ You know? The typical start to the ‘we’re sorry we don’t want you’ speech, but then he said, ‘And I’m happy to be able to offer you the scholarship.’ “My mom said she knew that I’d gotten it just by the way my body language changed from sentence to sentence.” The scholarship will pay all of Kasey’s expenses to attend Indiana University — including room and board — and even provide for study abroad should she so desire. She plans to major in history and political science while at IU saying, “…I really love to look at the past to see what we’ve done and what we should be doing. I love to discuss things. I love class discussion. It gives you an opportunity to hear other points of view. It’s a great experience to hear what somebody has to say.” She credits a couple of teachers with her love for history. “I had Mr. Leland in the eighth grade and I loved it,” she said. “I think that some of my passion for history is because of Mrs. Hargrove, who teaches here at the high school. She’s very passionate about it and I think that rubs off.” Kasey lives at home with her Mom Krista, Dad John and her very little brother James. “He’s 3 years old,” she says with a smile. “It was a shock when he was born but he’s so much fun I couldn’t imagine my high school years without him.”
