Pilot photo/Greg Hildebrand By Rusty Nixon Correspondent PLYMOUTH — One local Boy Scout wanted Chief Menominee to be a little more presentable. “The main thing was putting in a flower bed and cutting out some branches,” said Tim Bessinger of his Eagle Scout project to spruce up the monument to an Indian legend. “There were some limbs that were right up to his face and a couple of trees that needed to be cut back. We wanted everybody to have a chance to see the Chief.”
The project will also see new flower beds, top soil in certain areas and a plaque with facts about Chief Menominee to be added on the site. George Hopple, Terry Doody of CMD Constuction and Design, Prices Nursery, Mark McIntire and Lowe’s all lent a hand in various ways from mulch to lumber. The statue is located on Peach Road in Plymouth. Scouting has been a big part of Bessinger’s life, starting in the third grade. “When I was younger it was because I really just liked camping and stuff,” said Bessinger. “I became an official member of my Boy Scout Troop when I was 11. I want to go into the military and people told me that being an Eagle Scout would help.” Bessinger one day hopes to defend his country as a member of the United States Marine Corp. “I had some uncles that were in the Air Force,” he said. “I don’t know, the Marines have just always been my favorite branch of the service. I always liked the things they did and what they were all about.” Away from his duties, Bessinger is just like any other guy. “I like to play soccer, hang out with my friends and play Halo,” said Bessinger. “I like to play games where you have to run. I can run forever.” While the military is a part of his future, Bessinger is also looking ahead to another avenue for his talents. “Some of the coolest stuff I can think of would be to be a video game developer or computer programmer,” he said. “One day I’d like to be involved with that.”
