Variance allows for tattoos at salon

November 14, 2012

PLYMOUTH — Simplicity by Drendalyn, 1505 W. Jefferson St., in Plymouth was approved to have a tattoo artist operate out of the building.
Owner Drendalyn Ortiz told the Plymouth Board of Zoning Appeals Tuesday night that the plan was to offer cosmetic tattooing.
Ortiz said she didn’t plan to keep late hours for the tattoo shop and that no extra signage would pop up as a result of it.
Building Commissioner Keith Hammonds said that after looking at the variance petition, his office saw no way it would affect public safety or decency.
Letters of remonstrance were sent out to neighbors 300 feet from Ortiz’s business.
Doug Feece, president of the Plymouth Plan Commission, received a letter as a neighbor.
While he was not against Ortiz’s request but had a general problem with the issue of tattoo shops.
“The state of Indiana requires barbers to be licensed but it doesn’t license tattoo parlors,” said Feece.
Ortiz said she has asked someone from the state’s health department office to inspect her shop and guide her on proper ways to operate with a tattoo artist on site.
Ortiz’s variance request was approved 4-0.
But the talk of tattoo shops, led to the discussion of a variance that was granted for one on North Michigan Street in October 2009.
While the previous business has since closed down, the board Tuesday night found out that the variance to allow for a tattoo shop doesn’t expire unless set forth by the board itself.
In the only other case the board heard, William and Janet Smith, 12043 Lupine Lane, Plymouth, were granted a setback variance for their side yard.
William Smith explained it was to build a pole barn to store vehicles.
The board approved the variance 4-0.
Board members are Keith Wickens, Jim Sherwood, Phil Scott, Mark Gidley and Alan Selge.
Selge was absent from Tuesday night’s meeting.
