United Way of Marshall Co. at 50% of goal

December 27, 2011

PLYMOUTH — Executive director of Marshall County United Way Linda Yoder said Wednesday that the organization is at about 50 percent of this year’s campaign goal of $475,000.
“We are still asking everyone we know to help support United Way and the agencies that are counting on us to provide support for their next year,” said Yoder.
The funds United Way collects helps support 19 human service agencies in the county. Some of these non-profits rely on United Way to provide most of their funding for the year, while others use United Way contributions to offer services that they would be unable to fund otherwise.
“We keep hearing from the agencies that needs are increasing,” said Yoder. “They are seeing folks coming in that they have never served before. (Some organizations) are really struggling.”
Yoder said that a major misconception of donating to United Way is that a contribution must be a large dollar amount.
“Some people think they don’t have a lot to give, (but) the biggest thing we want to convey to people is that every dollar counts,” said Yoder. “If everybody in the Marshall County workplace gave $1 a week, it would add up to $1.2 million over a year.”
Yoder added that monthly pledges made now will not go into effect until January, eliminating the touchiness of trying to obtain donations during holiday season.
United Way volunteers will continue campaigning over the next month, with a goal to wrap up by the end of January. Businesses interested in dong a campaign among their employees still have the opportunity to do so, and United Way will also accept any year-end gifts.
