LONDON — Plymouth native Morgan Uceny clocked a 4:06.87, inching out Belarus' Natallia Kareiva in a photo finish for second place in the third heat of the first round of the women's 1500-meter run at the London Olympics Monday morning.
The finish qualifies Uceny for Wednesday's semifinals, scheduled to begin at 2:45 p.m. EST. U.S. teammate Jenny Simpson also qualified for the semifinals, earning the last ticket out of the second heat with a 4:13.81 time for sixth place. Shannon Rowbury missed the sixth-place semifinal cut in the first heat but still qualified for the second round of racing with a 4:06.03 time as the top six finishers from each heat advance along with the next six fastest times from the prelims.
Uceny moved to the outside early in order to avoid getting boxed in by the pack Monday. She moved into third place quickly but slipped back in the field during some tense moments in the third lap before kicking it in in the final lap to qualify for the semis with plenty of room to spare.
