Uceny ranked No. 8 in the world to end 2012

January 2, 2013

Plymouth residents will long-remember Morgan Uceny’s anguish at the 2012 London Olympics.
The Plymouth High School graduate tripped and fell to the track just as she was moving into position to win a Gold Medal in the women’s 1500-meter run.
But a track athlete’s season is more than one race, and while the Olympics didn’t go the way she hoped, Uceny was a key player in the other places she ran during 2012.
So much so that Track & Field News magazine has ranked Uceny No. 8 in the world in its year-end wrap-up.
Uceny is ranked No. 2 among women’s 1500-meter runners in the United States.
Called “The Bible of the Sport” by fans, Track & Field News magazine has been publishing world and U.S. rankings for 66 years, compiling the votes of media members across the globe.
It’s a step-down for Uceny, who ranked No. 1 in the world a year ago. But Uceny was injured in her fall at the Olympics and was unable to complete the full track season, thus missing many key races on the European circuit.
Turkey’s Aslı Çakır Alptekin, the Olympic Gold Medal winner, is ranked No. 1 in the world, despite lingering accusations of doping.
Shannon Rowbury, the top American finisher at the Olympics, is ranked No. 1 in the U.S.
Uceny is the two-time defending national champion in the women’s 1500, and dominated the U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore., last summer.
But Rowbury ran the complete season and her sixth-place finish at the Olympics is the best-ever by an American woman in the 1500.
Uceny is now preparing for the 2013 season, and has moved her training base from southern California to England, where she is being coached by Terrence Mahon.
