Trojans survive scrappy Zebras

February 13, 2013

BOURBON — The Triton Trojans picked up another win as they held off the Rochester Zebras 60-45 at the Trojan Trench Tuesday night.
The Trojans started the game off slow and let Rochester stay in the game. They didn’t get much going on the offensive end early, taking only a four-point lead at the end of the first quarter 12-8.
Rochester played Triton tight throughout most of the second quarter. During one Zebra offensive sequence, Rochester missed a shot and then collected the offensive rebound, and without a single Trojan contesting it, and put it back up for an easy two points. This prompted Triton coach Jason Groves to call a time out to get his team back in the game mentally.
With 3:07 left in the quarter, Triton only led 19-14. After the time out, Triton came to life and closed out the quarter with a 26-16 lead.
“We’ve been playing three and a half or three quarters strong and then we take a quarter off or two quarters, whatever it may be. It was no different tonight,” said Coach Groves. “I thought we came out in the third quarter and did what we do and executed really well. That’s what I have been talking about to our guys all year long. We have to be focused for four quarters and execute for four quarters.”
In the third quarter the Trojans did just what Groves said and executed almost to perfection, starting the quarter on an 18-0 run. From there, Rochester slowly started to chip away at that lead. Triton led 46-24 after the third, and that margin would prove to be enough to outlast the Zebras.
Rochester fought hard and played tough defense in the final quarter, not going down without a fight, outscoring the Trojans 21-14 in the quarter.
In the end, the lead the Trojans built in the third quarter proved to be enough.
“You can’t look at Rochester’s record,” Groves said, when asked if this was a “trap” game for the Tritons, after playing a big conference game against Bremen and heading into a big showdown with Tippy Valley. “They are playing much better as of late. They are playing good defense. They play their 2-3 zone and are scrappy with that. This didn’t surprise me at all.
“Kids will be kids and they’ll look at records and say ‘Well, they’ve only won four games.’ Their coach is doing a good job and they are heading in the right direction. Give them credit. They came out and played hard and didn’t give up. It was sloppy at times, but we still came out with a 15-point victory.”
With the win, Triton improves to 13-5 and will host Tippy Valley on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Rochester’s record now stands at 4-13.
